3-2-1 Actionable Spearing Intel

3 Actionable Tips | 2 Big Ideas | 1 Question

G'day legend,

This month's Floater comes from a two-part adventure — Noffs, Chiz, Livvy, Matty and Rhys (No Viz Adventures) jetted off to Amed, Bali to smash out their freediving instructors course with Adam Sellers from The Pressure Project. Airport drama, an LMC on day one, mouthfill mysteries, and a final two days spearing dollies and triple tail on the rumpongs. Full froth from start to finish.

I wasn't even on this trip — the crew ran the mics themselves — and it might be some of the best fly-on-the-wall spearo content we've put out.

Listen here: Part 1 | Part 2

🎯 3 Actionable Tips from Rob

1. Stop Over-Packing Your Lungs — Try This Breathe-Up

Noffs had lost his breathe-up mojo, jamming too much air into his lungs and spiking his heart rate before every dive. Then Adam Sellars shared how on his big final inhale he didn't overfill to the point of discomfort. Noffs tried it that afternoon and had his most comfortable dive in years. If your breathe-up feels like hard work, you're probably overfilling. Relaxed beats maximal every time.

2. Put Your Hands Up on the Ascent

Straight from Rhys: next time you're swimming up from depth freediving, extend your arms above your head. You're way more streamlined, you burn less oxygen, and when you hit positive buoyancy you can throw in a stroke and ride it home. You don't need to hold it the whole way — but as spearos we almost never think about ascent efficiency, and this one's free speed. Liv tried it and reckons it could be the X factor for comfort on deeper line dives.

3. Sort Your Travel Admin (and Never Say the G Word)

The crew nearly didn't make it out of Australia. Lessons learned the hard way: check the name on your ticket matches your passport (autofill nearly grounded Noffs in Mackay), sort your visa, arrival card, travel insurance and tourist levy before the night before, and when customs asks what's in the bag — it's fishing equipment not SPEARGUNS. Answer a private number at the airport too; that call saved Noffs' entire dive kit from being left in Brisbane.

Big Idea #1: Your Training Numbers Don't Guarantee Anything — Listen to Your Body

Rhys had been training well past 3:30 statics with zero symptoms. Then day one in a 30-degree pool, feeling shaky from the start, he pushed to the number anyway — and had his first LMC. His big takeaway: the number means nothing if your body's telling you today's not the day. Spearfishing and freediving are unforgiving sports; push it and you're out for days, not hours. He called it a wake-up call. Slower is faster, and "listen to your body" came up more times across these two episodes than any other lesson.

Big Idea #2: Give Your Inner Critic a Name (Even If It's the Poo Emoji)

Adam Sellars, prepping for the World Championships, gives his intrusive thoughts a persona. Negative voice creeps in during the breathe-up? "Oh, hello Nana." Or he just pictures the poo emoji and laughs it off. Liv put it to work at 25 metres when the imposter syndrome kicked in mid-breathe-up. The point isn't the emoji — it's that you don't fight the negative voice, you acknowledge it, make it a bit ridiculous, and carry on. The whole crew hit adversity on this trip — fever, blood noses, an LMC, zero training — and the mindset stuff is what got them through.

1 Question:

Have you ever had a wake-up call in the water that changed how you dive?

G'day legend, This one's a bit different. A short rant on pool training, three new articles you can choose from depending on where you're at, and a favour to ask at the end. Let's go. 🏊 The Pool Is Your Mid-Week Training Session Wayne Judge wrote something on the Noob Spearo blog years ago that's stuck with me. People say the best training for spearfishing is spearfishing. Wayne's reply: if that were true, footy teams would play a game every Wednesday instead of training. Marathon runners...

G'day Reader, You've either been on a boat with us or put your hand up for the intermediate and charter side of things — so this episode is squarely for you. I just published NSP:321 with Matt Parker. Matty manages Divers World in Cairns, has been spearing for 25 years and guiding for six, and runs MBP Spearfishing Charters. He also happens to be the bloke I'm running Deep North with next March. I've wanted him on the show for ages — he came highly requested by the North Queensland crew — and...

G'day Reader You put your hand up for the intermediate/advanced stuff — trips where you're already comfortable in the water and you just want more of it, deeper, further out, with better fish. This is that trip. Deep North. 13–21 March 2027. Nine days on the Great Barrier Reef.
