G'day Reader You put your hand up for the intermediate/advanced stuff — trips where you're already comfortable in the water and you just want more of it, deeper, further out, with better fish. This is that trip. Deep North. 13–21 March 2027. Nine days on the Great Barrier Reef. Matt Parker and I are running it together off the Norkat II — a 72-foot Westcoaster out of Half Moon Bay Marina, Yorkey's Knob. Ten spearos. Two dories. Air-con cabins, a cook, a big freezer, and 200 nautical miles of range to get us properly away from everything. If the trip sounds familiar, it's because it's the same one Matt's been running been running for year BUT this time, I'm coming too! Let's be clear: this is not a course You won't get a certificate. There's no classroom, no theory block, no assessment. What you will get is two in-water guides diving alongside you for nine days. Matt and me, in the water with you, every session. Which means when you're wondering why the Mu keeps ghosting you, or why your float line keeps tangling, or how to actually approach a doggie instead of spooking it — you ask, and you get an answer from someone who just watched you do it. That's a different kind of learning to a course. It's the kind you can't unlearn. Plus nine days of froth, fish stories, daily debriefs, and the sort of adventure that resets your standards for what a good dive trip looks like. What you're hunting There's a list that keeps people coming back — Maori sea perch, buffalo emperor, yellow lip emperor, and mu. Not to mention, some opps on Pelagics such as Spanish Mackerel, GT's and who knows....maybe even a Dogtooth Tuna. The day Breakfast at 7. In the water by 8. Lunch back on the boat at 1. Back out at 2. Last dive wraps up around 5:30. Repeat. Unlimited spearfishing across varying reefs, with the dories getting us onto ground most people never see. What's included
Not included: alcohol (BYO is fine) and travel insurance (get it — seriously). The numbers

G'day legend, This one's a bit different. A short rant on pool training, three new articles you can choose from depending on where you're at, and a favour to ask at the end. Let's go. 🏊 The Pool Is Your Mid-Week Training Session Wayne Judge wrote something on the Noob Spearo blog years ago that's stuck with me. People say the best training for spearfishing is spearfishing. Wayne's reply: if that were true, footy teams would play a game every Wednesday instead of training. Marathon runners...
G'day Reader, You've either been on a boat with us or put your hand up for the intermediate and charter side of things — so this episode is squarely for you. I just published NSP:321 with Matt Parker. Matty manages Divers World in Cairns, has been spearing for 25 years and guiding for six, and runs MBP Spearfishing Charters. He also happens to be the bloke I'm running Deep North with next March. I've wanted him on the show for ages — he came highly requested by the North Queensland crew — and...
